A real life adventure on the high seas .....

This October, the newly built replica of Sweden's East Indiaman Sailing ship, the Götheborg, sets sail for China. Built in 1734 in Stockholm, the Götheborg ran aground and sank at the entrance to its home port, Göthenburg, in 1745 after a two year journey to China and the Far East.
The loss was an enormous blow for the Swedish East India Company, one of Sweden's largest companies at the time.

The Swedish East India Company run by the Swedish-Scottish team of merchants, Colin Campbell, William Chalmers, Anders Sahlgren and Claes Grill, enjoyed a monopoly on all Swedish trade east of the Cape of Good Hope and was hugely successful. The company financed 132 expeditions to China’s southern port of Canton (Guang-dong), bringing back highly prized Chinese porcelain, silk, spice and not least, tea.

The owners became extremely wealthy on the lucrative trade, and through large donations to the city of Göthenburg, founded institutions that carry their name today, the prestigious Chalmers University of Technology and the world renowned Sahlgrenska University Hospital.

The new East Indianman was built according to traditional techniques and is a meticulously faithful copy of the original Götheborg - albeit with the discrete addition of modern electricity, communication equipment and an engine in case of emergencies. On the voyage to China, the Götheborg will visit Recife in Brasil, Capetown, South Africa and Freemantle in Western Australia before finally reaching Canton in July 2006. The modern-day Götheborg's mission is to carry information rather than iron ore and timber - promoting Swedish industry and tourism.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
