ČESKÝ ROZHLAS 7
In 2006 we celebrate two important birthdays. Radio Prague has been on air for an impressive 70 years, and it will also be the 250th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Of course Mozart wash’! Czech,
but he did have close links with Prague, a city which he visited several times.
A number of his works were first performed here, so it is apt that the Czech capital is hosting a major festival - “Mozart Praha 2006”. In the course of the year there will be opportunities to hear many of Mozart's most famous and lesser known works in Prague's main concert halls.
The Estates Theatre (originally Nostic Theatre) There are several places in the Czech capital closely associated with Mozart. One is the Estates Theatre (originally Nostic Theatre), where Mozart first conducted some of his works and performed them on the piano. Another is the Villa Bertramka, where he stayed during his visits in 1787 and 1791. This is also where he completed his opera Don Giovanni, which was first performed on the 29th October 1787 in the Nostic Theatre. After Mozart’s death his children grew up partly at Bertramka; his son Thomas was there for five years. Today the villa houses a concert hall and a museum devoted to the great composer.
Radio Prague is constantly striving to improve reception around the world. The relay transmission of our Spanish broadcasts via Ascension has been a great success and l am sure that listeners in Latin America will also appreciate the relay of our programme via the transmitter in Sackville, Canada.
I should add a few words about digital radio: Radio Prague is one of the stations of Czech Radio, which in 2005 launched digital broadcasts on Czech territory using the system DVB-T Radio Prague itself is focusing on DRM (digital AM) which is suitable for digital broadcasts over long distances. We hope that cheap portable receivers will soon be on the market, and that we will start broadcasting through DRM.
I'd like to end by congratulating the winner in our Radio Prague listeners' competition, Agnes Simoni from France. She proved that beer is not just a male domain!
