Michael Chance COUNTERTENOR
Fretwork
Richard Campbell, Wendy Gillespie, William Hunt, Julia Hodgson, Susanna Pell, Richard Boothby

Since his last appearance in International Recital ten years ago, Michael Chance has established himself as one of the world’s most sought-after counter-tenors. He combines modern music with the renaissance and baroque repertoire in recitals and opera performances all over Europe, North America and Australasia.

His counter-tenor had a sinuous and sinister purity of phrase, securing vibrant attention to every ward. (The Times, London)

Already established as a leading force in early music, Fretwork is also building a repertory of new works, with and without voices. Since its debut in 1986, the group has visited over twenty countries, including Turkey, the Baltic Republics, Poland, Russia, the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

A fascinating, beautifully-played programme Fretwork addressed all this music with an easy-going virtuosity. In variation sets, the principal lines moved smoothly and easily from one instrument to the next, and in chordal music, the players produced a well-tuned, fully balanced sound with a delightfully tangy character, (New York Times)

GUARNERI TRIO PRAGUE

Ivan Klánský PIANO
Čeněk Pavlík VIOLIN
Marek Jerie CELLO

The trio this year celebrates its 10th anniversary. The players, all former students of the Prague Academy of Music, are also soloists in their own right. Ivan Klánský's concert career began when he won the Bolzano Competition in 1967; he has performed in recitals and concertos throughout Europe, as well as in Japan, North America and Africa.
Čeněk Pavlík is one of the leading soloists of his generation of Czech violinists. He plays a Guarneri del Gesù violin, once owned by violinists Zimbalist and Heifetz. Marek Jerie studied with the celebrated virtuosi Casals, Rostropovitch and Navarra; he plays a cello made by Andrea Guarneri in 1684.

Czech playing at its most masterly and seductive. (The Sunday Times, London)

Here was chamber-playing with tension, emotional penetration, subtle articulation and freshness. (The Independent, London)

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
