Radio Korea International began its first broadcasts as the Voice of Free Korea on August 15, 1953. its name was changed from Voice of Free Korea to Radio Korea on April 1, 1973 and again changed to Radio Korea International on August 15, 1994, in keeping with South Korea's campaign for globalization.
Radio Korea International is now broadcasting in ten languages-Korean, English, Japanese, Chinese, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Indonesian, and Arabic, transmitting signals on a total of 24 frequencies (23 shortwave frequencies and one medium wave frequency) 111 hours a day to listeners in all corners of the world. RKl’s primary goal is to strengthen friendship and understanding among peoples of the world, offering accurate and up-to-date news on Korea's politics, society, culture, tradition and economy, as well as a variety of informative and interesting programs on the Land of the Morning Calm.
RKI will continue to honor its commitment to worldwide listeners by providing pleasant listening experiences for many days, weeks, and years to come.
