DEUTSCHE WELLE Programmes and Reception Summer 2000
Editorial

Dear Listener,
the first year of the new millennium — or more precisely the last one of the old — began with a change at the top of Deutsche Welle's English Radio Service.
Michael Behrens has left and I had the pleasure of being appointed the new Head of the Service after having served as the department's chief of current affairs programmes for almost ten years.
But more changes are ahead — and these concern matters nearer to your heart; as a result of the stringent budget cuts made bythe German Parliament in 1999 a number of English Service broadcasts will have to cease with the beginning of Central European Summer Time on March 27th, 2000.
The first daily edition of Africa Report at 1130 UTC as well as the first daily Asia Pacific Report at 0830 UTC have fallen victim to the financial restraints imposed on Deutsche Welle as a whole. Nonetheless I must admit that the English Service has emerged relatively unscathed compared with other language departments which had to be closed down. At the same time, we’ll introduce some new or at least greatly revamped features: a joint fortnightly edition of Development Forum for Africa and Asia and — four times a week from Tuesday to Friday — a new infotainment programme for Africa. ln "Hallo Africa" listeners’ feedback will take pride of place, but there will also be interviews and reports about African residents in Germany, human interest stories as well as news from listeners'club activities.
We would love to have your reactions to the new features but naturally also appreciate any other comments or suggestions you may have for our programming. Last year’s listeners’ feedback, which totalled over 450,000 letters, e-mails and other forms of communication, clearly shows the lively interest in Deutsche Welle's worldwide activities — and we here in Cologne always welcome your praise as well as your constructive criticism.

Sincerely
Dieter Wernig

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
