No.2 1994

THE DATE IS SET
135 parties are expected to contest the Parliamentary general elections in May. Of course, the Vast majority of the 135 are not so much parties as small groups unable to put up more than ten or twelve candidates. Few if any will be able to gain the 5% threshold, that is the percentage of the total vote needed for seats in Parliament. In 1990, only 6 of the then 100 odd parties which contested the first free elections, won representation in Parliament. In this edition of AS WE SEE IT, we give you a rundown on the six and a further briefing on nine which we consider may reach the 5% threshold in 1994.
A word of explanation before we continue. Where you read references to historical parties e.g. Smallholders or the Social Democrats, this indicates that these parties existed prior to 1948. Later they were banned by the Communist government.

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, thy King cometh unto thee; He is the righteous Saviour, and He shall speak peace unto the heathen.
