AWR CURRENT Adventist World Radio Listener Newsletter. Spring 2001.
How beautiful are your feet? It's probably not something you think about too often — and certainly not at the end of a two day hike through mountains and rough terrain. Smelly, aching and blistered seem more appropriate words than beautiful.
Yet thirteen young people who tromped though the Snowdonia National Park in Wales where declared to have “Beautiful Feet" when AWR's English Language Service Director, Victor Hulbert, met with them in North Wales.
Victor told them that their arduous hike through the mountains was declared beautiful by Isaiah when he stated “How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, "Your God reigns!" Isaiah 52:7 NIV
Their 26 mile (42km) walk fulfilled the criteria for two reasons:
Firstly, two hundred years ago Mary Jones, a young girl from the small village of Abergynolwyn was desperate for a Bible in her own language. She saved money for years to be able to afford it. She then walked over the mountains, a full 26 miles (42km), to the town of Bala to buy it. There she got not just one, but two family-size Bibles in the Welsh Language. She delightedly carried them the full 26 miles back. Her story of courage and determination inspired generations of Bible readers and Bible translators to make the book more available.
In celebration of the 200th anniversary of this epic journey, the Welsh teenagers followed the same route using the expedition to raise funds for a cause that would continue to help the Good News of the Bible be more available across the world. They had heard reports of the work of Adventist World Radio so they decided to put their energy into raising funds to support “The Voice of Hope” being heard around the world. Their “beautiful feet” helped raise over £600 (US$850).
On March 10, 2001 Victor Hulbert was able to meet with some of them, thank them for their contribution, and encourage them with stories of what AWR is able to achieve around the world as a “Voice of Hope for all peoples". Just a few of those with “Beautiful Feet” who support AWR around the world.
